I'm not a good pistol shot and we're going to clean up a trail in the woods tomorrow - would a .12 ga. with buckshot stop a hog or do you need a rifle?
A rifle or shotgun with buckshot would be plenty effective.
But I thought I remember you buying a S&W686. If you load that with some heavy 357 rounds (like 158gr) it could also be pretty effective against them.
Then again, a shotgun or rifle will be easier to shoot, just not as compact as your revolver.

No, they are not.
Some people on this board act like hogs can break into your house and night and eat your children. Don't mess with them and you won't have a problem. Their first instinct is to run.
And because some people can't understand the concept, I will make this statement: If you are going to actively hunt them then yes, you should carry a gun. If you are walking through the woods looking at the leaves, you will be ok.

true in most, if not all cases about actually not being in danger while just walking around. but, in case my statement about my grandfather was taken the wrong way by the op, for after rereading, I didn't explain how it happened. that incident occurred while hog hunting with dogs. we certainly all had guns, but it happened so fast and in such tight quarters, there wasn't any safe (for US) way to kill the hog without endangering us.
reh- sumptin, sumptin, OP, , "staying away from that neighborhood", ahhh, I understand!
eddie, I'm not in moe house parrish!

I've never been charged unless we were hog hunting. If they have a way to escape then they will turn inside out getting away. If they feel cornered they will try to bluff you first then charge. Slim to no chance of getting attacked by hogs unless you're trying to make em attack you.

I had a big sow charge me 3-4 years ago and 22 beretta pistol to the face stopped her.
I wasn't looking for leaves. I was putting corn out and drove my 4-wheeler about 30 yards from them. It didn't even phase them. I walked over the ridge and it was a big time oh shite moment. I never knew I could draw a gun that quick till that day. I put 4-5 extra rounds in her face. Our scale tops out at 250 and she bottomed it out. I don't think she was much over 250 though.
