Don't let a regular dentist do a root canal. I made that mistake and ended up having to get a root canal on the same tooth(that already had a crown on it) a couple years later because the dentist didn't do it right the first time(tooth abscessed). Always go to an endodontist.
As for cost....just depends on if you have good dental insurance. I know mine pays 80% so I didn't have to pay much out of pocket.
I've had a couple done....worst one took 4 hours(the one the dentist did), the least painful one took like 45 minutes(endodontist).

Just find a dentist that knows what he is doing and you'll be alright.
Endodontists also don't have 100% success rate. Sometimes nurses patients die too.
