You could have 3 best teams in the same conference and you will not have them in the play off with 4 teams. Also, nobody can tell which top 10 team is the best at the end of season unless they play it off. Currently, preseason rankings and schedule are big factors in selecting final 4.

Well since they are in the same conference there are other ways to separate them

That's just wrong. Like someone else said, the BCS top 4 has been pretty damn correct taking into account the entire season's work to that point. And no need to point out outliers with some upsets that have happened in the past. That just also proves that expanding a one-off playoff field is even more flawed than the current system.
