Here's my thing -- "3 very good years" -- you burn next year because the lineup is still too young to get you very far with the talent in the division.

So that means you're really paying 5 years to get you 2 meaningful season. Is it really worth it?

You're spot on Changeup.

Think about if this way. If we win 2 of our last 5 this year, we will have improved by 20 games.

And that's still 27 games out of first in this division.

ETA: and 17 games out of 2nd/wild card

Why not spend the money you could splash on one big starter for three good vets for the bullpen? That's what they need while they continue to sort out the young arms who can potentially start long-term.

Let's say Keuchel and Jabroni are legit. Appel seems on track to reach the rotation soon enough. There are other options who need MLB starts to determine if they are legit. Let that play out another season.
