Dunno but I bought a 6 this morning. The store I went to only had twelve 6+s.
If you didn't get a pre-order 6+, or don't get one before the on-hand inventory runs out... you may be waiting a while (like 1 month+) before you'll have access to one.
Sorry.

I literally have no idea why they would think that.

In years past, they only released one size fits all. So, with the release of two sizes... they didn't know what percentage of production should be allocated to which size (also considerations to the 3 storage sizes and 3 color options for each model).
They probably just went with the market studies which told them how to plan production to maximize profits.
Women with purses don't have much of a reason to care about phone size. Hell, they can carry around an Ipad with Cell service. But I want a phone that will fit in my pocket. The fact that alot of people won't want it because of its size makes large production numbers at release risky.
I think they were just hedging their bets so that they didn't overproduce the 5.5" if it wasn't well received by the market given that they could always request more from production.

Myself and most of friends did not want the 6+ because of the size of it. When it's all said and done I think they'll say a lot more 6s than 6+s.

Being able to hold both, the plus just doesn't seem overwhelming
