Never been but this place gets good buzz here.
I guess he's not happy with the new digs?

For a few, difficult weeks, the fiercely loyal regulars of Kanno California Sushi Bar suffered through lunch without their favorite rolls. But on Aug. 21, the Fat City Japanese restaurant quietly reopened around the corner from its original location.

Now Suzuki owns a bright red building a block away. It's actually smaller than the old Kanno by about 400 square feet.
"On the dining area it feels bigger," he said, "because I have a high ceiling."
Suzuki finally hung a sign on the side of his building. But it only has the restaurant's name.
"I don't put Japanese restaurant or anything on it," he said. "I don't want any walk-in customers."

So why do a write up with NOLA ? So some mouth breather who has never been there can make a thread on a msg board.

Not sure how you got out of that that he isnt happy with the new digs. Just seems like he doesnt want anymore customers.
Wife went last week or so, said it was just as awesome as the old spot but a touch less drab and disheveled.

Admittedly, I only scanned the article and I've never been to the restaurant.
I hope to disappoint the chef and be a first-timer soon.

What's good at Kanno? Think I may shoot over there for lunch soon. Any can't miss items?

I've never had anything bad there. I only go for lunch so sometimes I just order the sashimi lunch special. The albacore tuna salad, soft shell miso soup, Elvis roll or some other items heavy in my roatation over there.

Its sort of, to me at least, a little like going to Galatoire's. Sure they have a menu, but you are better off just putting your trust in Elvis' hands. sushi and sashimi are great, but I like to just ask them to bring out 3 courses or 4 courses of things.
He has always had an awesome soft shell crab miso gumbo and a fantastic grilled squid dish. Just tell the waitress what you like and let it go from there. Last time I went, that brought forth a tomato salad with plum jelly, a mango and albacore salad of sorts, and a fried softshell crawfish hand roll.
The raw fish salad (usually a type of tuna with other things) with jalapeno dressing is pretty awesome when he has is. Lunch is the way to go. Or you can do Kanno>Korea House for a dinner that almost beats anything else in town.

That softshell crab-miso soup is damn tasty. But I never seem to end up at Kanno or anyplace else in Fat City.

Kanno is my favorite sushi, anywhere. I've been going there for the past 12 years and I've never been disappointed.
I recommend
Elvis Roll
Softshell Miso
Marinated albacore tuna
Softshell crawfish hand roll
Lobster dynamite roll
