i know you think this might be over the top..but a new bluetooth headunit from pioneer or sony is probably $100 and will provide a way better experience than a dangly FM tape thingie.
i've put in several head units and if its an older car, it might be as simple as just popping the old one out, matching up the wires & plugging in the new harness.
newer cars particularly in the last 10 years make it much more painful to swap..but if he's got a tape player in his car now, he might be a candidate.
