while heading down, were going to stay a night in Alabama. Have the dog with us and a 15 hour trip with the dog is brutal on the wife(dog wants to ride in her lap, it's a 55lb dog)
Dothan, unfortunately, the hotel i wanted is booked. Need a residence in type of place. 4 couple going.
So what city? Looking for some where in the 4 hours from Port st.joe area. Montgomery?

I would think Montgomery is going to be more than 4 hours from Port St. Joe. Maybe Troy but not sure of hotels in that area. Dothan best but sounds like that is out.

If you can make it to Dothan you might as well drive 2 or 3 more hours and reach your destination. You could stay in Marianna FL where you cross I10.

Montgomery or Troy would be the places you're looking for.

i was going to rent a great place in Cape, last house next to park, but i waited 1 day to late, and it was rented out. So we found a place on the beach in Port St.Joe. Cost same, but actually has a private pool and hot tub and is front row on beach.
Sounds like we will do Firefly for anniversary(PCB), recommendations on here were great for firefly.

Google maps says Montgomery is about 4 hours away from PSJ. You probably won't be able to check in until late afternoon (3-ish?) anyway.
Never stayed in Port St. Joe, but have been to St. Joseph's Peninsula/Cape San Blas a few times. Very peaceful area.

we were looking for relaxing, and cape/st,joe was recommended.
I enjoyed Dauphin Island. It was super relaxing, not the tourist traps.

St Joe, Cape San blas, Mexico beach, apalachicola are all frickin awesome places to get away

You'll enjoy it. PCB is a good bit more touristy though.
Oh, and upon returning, you can't tell any of your friends anything good about the place. It really, really sucks, got it?

The cape is covered with Ebola ladder Bama fans. Do not go there ever. Ya hear?

There are 15 hotels here in Dothan

Condolences in advance for driving on the RCC.
Generally a faster, definitely a safer route through Montgomery is to take I-85 (Atlanta exit) from I-65 then take exit 9(Taylor Road/SR 271) on I-85. Taylor Road dead ends with US 231 South of Montgomery. Of course if you want to find some crack, a street-walker, or maybe even both, then take the Southern Blvd through Montgomery.
There are a total of 3 traffic light cameras on Taylor Road - (1) Eastchase Parkway - the second light after you're on Taylor Road; (2) At Vaughn Road - the only major intersection on Taylor Road - McD's on right just before light; (3) at US 231 South - both lanes turn left, so try to avoid being behind a large truck - green light is short.
Be aware that there is ongoing construction in both directions between Montgomery and Troy.
Also, just north of Prattville, between exit 186 and 181, there is an area where every week I see two state troopers doing their best to balance the Alabama state budget mainly using the Ka band.
If you have Waze, use it!

In Secluded Dunes? We had a house there growing up - 4/5 from the park border. That's absolutely the best place to be.

Yes, was really nice, no pool or hot tub, but it was a really nice house. This one is also, just further down the coast.
Any difference in water clarity, compared to water near park, and the water down the coast in Port St.Joe?

Water clarity should only be significantly different near the mouth of an inlet where dirty water may enter the Gulf. That's not much of a problem in that area.

The whole St. Joseph's Peninsula area is so underrated. Apalachicola is a great little town.

Any restaurant recommendations for Port st.joe area?
Sounds like people love the Joe Mammas pizza place, any other places for food?
Would love to find some sort of breakfast place for a couple of mornings.
here seem to be the choices:

So staying in Southern Montgomery(airport) is cool?
From a map view, it looks like everything south of downtown is decent area. North it gets shitty.

Not sure about water clarity, but Port St. Joe is on St. Joseph's Bay, protected from the ocean by St. Joseph's Peninsula. Mexico Beach (farther north but not on the bay) is supposed to be one of the calmest ocean beach areas.
The times we went we waded into the Bay from the state park, and the water in the bay was very clear. Friends like to go snorkling in the bay also, but that was hard for us to do with little kids.
