Can't believe he decomitted because of a shoe situation.

Really good article about the decommitment and Nike's involvement...
Good article. I wonder how much these shoe companies are greasing the kids' advisors/family members.

While I appreciate Meyer offering some insight into the behind the scenes regarding basketball recruiting, is anyone else surprised that he seems to be taking the stance that these kids owe the shoe companies something and seemingly doesn't have a problem with the shoe companies being heavily involved in the recruiting process?
Also, until the recruitment of collegiate flute players stops being run by people that genuinely care about helping a kid develop as a musician and start becoming run by people that only care about how much money they can make off their flute players, then his analogy is shite.

I think the show companies can create an impact but I don't think they control recruiting in any form or fashion. For instance, Andrew Wiggins and the Harrison Twins went against the show companies that sponsored their teams in high school.
Not sure if this has been discussed in this thread, but a kentucky site reported that Newman tweeted on Sunday that he just got off the phone with Blakeney and then the kid decommited the next day. Could there be a package deal in place? If so, you would think it's going to be a Kentucky-LSU battle

Unless you don't believe the things Meyer is saying in that article actually happened, I don't see how you can make that argument.

If LSU can land him he would be the most explosive shooting guard since Ronnie Henderson about 20 years ago. Marcus could flat out shoot but did not have the physicality that Henderson had.

I am just saying that it isn't the main contributor to where a kid goes to school. There may be a few instances here or there where the shoe company is a factor, but in most cases it is not a factor. The article shouldn't be taken as shoe companies as the dominant force in college basketball recruiting because there are many cases where kids go against the shoe company that has sponsored their AAU teams from high school.
Meyer even implies in his original tweets that playing up the shoe companies as a factor in the decision isn't usually a move he makes. This is one of the few instances where it matters. LINK

Marcus not only could flat out shoot but he most definitely could take it to the room and finish he wasn't scared of contact.

That's what I thought, too. Henderson was a different type of big guard in that he was athletic and explosive but not, in my opinion, as physical as Thornton. I've never seen Blakeney play, but I assume he'd be closer in body type and skills to Henderson at this point. I'd be thrilled to have either guy on this team.

Gotta feeling this recruitment is going to be the biggest recruiting shite storm in years.

All he says is that Nike wouldn't invite him to their big showcase games later in the year.... Says they may alienate him or treat him differently because he never even visited a Nike school before committing. He specifically said that no one from Nike told him to decommit...

Great point. I didn't mean Marcus was not physically tough, he certainly was. Henderson had more leaping ability and athleticism and could play above the rim at times. It was surprising he did not have a longer NBA career.

as a high school coach for 15 years I totally believe decisions are shoe related
if any doubt read the book SOLE INFLUENCE

So if he is really picking his school based on shoes, LSU is in good shape

Kentucky is a Nike school as well. I'm pretty sure it will come down to us and them.

I'm not saying they are the main contributor or most dominant force. But that doesn't mean they are not heavily involved. And just because a kid he's to a school sponsored by a different company does not mean the shoe companies were not heavily involved.
According to Meyer in the article, here is a breakdown of this situation. And this is by no means a one time occurrence. It's just the most recent, and more publicized than most.
- one of the very best players in the country plays aau ball for a nike team. "Everyone" around him and his "infrastructure of people who helped him get where he is" is nike.
- he takes his first official visit, to an Adidas school. He made no secret to about his love for this school before he even went on the visit. He commits to the school on his visit. He's so excited that he announces the commitment on social media before even telling the school's coaches.
- after committing, the previously mentioned nike infrastructure "abandons him" and "leaves him on an island"
- 11 days later, without having taken any other visits, the kid that was so in love with the Adidas school has decommitted and scheduled 4 more visits, all to nike schools. The reason for the decommittment is the nike influences were not happy he only visited an Adidas school and shut it down.
None of that seems wrong to you?

Direct quotes from Meyer in the article:
"What was the basis for the tweet about Blakeney's decision being based on shoe company affiliation? Facts. I knew this was gonna happen last week. I just didn't know it was gonna happen so soon. I'd been told it was gonna happen and why it would happen."
"This isn't the first time it's happened."
"It still seems strange that message wouldn't be sent to him beforehand, don't you think? Trust me, they did. He quit listening to them."
"I think the No. 1 thing is that the people around him, the support system, they want him to visit other schools, and that doesn't seem like an outlandish request."

1. That's not all he says.
"I think the No. 1 thing is that the people around him, the support system, they want him to visit other schools, and that doesn't seem like an outlandish request.
You need to visit these other schools just to help you make sure you're making the right decision and just out of courtesy for the process and just sort of how it works."
2. Even if that was "all he said" how is that being heavily involved in the recruiting process? Telling a kid how and where to use his official visits?
And before we go further, can we also talk about the absurdity of meyer's quote above? No, you don't need to visit other schools if you don't want to. Courtesy for the process? In what way does a recruit owe anything to the recruiting process? Just sort of how it works? bullshite. How it works is you get up to 5 official visits and unlimited unofficial visits to the institutions of your choosing. You can use 1, you can use all 5, you can use 0. There is no rule setting a minimum number of visits.

He specifically said that no one from Nike told him to decommit...
Was that in another article? Because in this one he just says the CEO didn't tell him decommit. Which isn't surprising because I doubt Phil knight even knows who Antonio Blakney is. But one of the hundreds of world wide Wes types that nike has out there? Seems entirely possible to me.
He specifically said that no one from Nike told him to decommit...[/quote]
