I've actually addressed this before. That was done soon after the new "gates" were put in right there by students. The letters were pulled off one at a time over the course of a few months.
USL's response? Nothing. They've left it like that, leaving the freaking holes that used to hold the wall anchors holding on the letters for Lafayette. You can still see the holes if you search street view on Google maps.
The school would prefer it to look shitty than be accurate.
But yeah...it's only an athletic nickname.

And let's be honest...the goal is and has always been to rebrand the entire university as University of Louisiana. The school, to it's credit, is slow pitching this...
Take a look at the first logos that came out. Back then, they didn't use Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. It was Louisiana's. That's not a misprint and it wasn't by accident. It was all they felt they could get away with at the time.
Years later...the "'S" gets dropped and suddenly they are the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, but you know...only for athletics.
Sneaky little bastards...haha.
