Pretty sure I just fried the A/C in my car. Hepl.

Bought one of the recharge things from AutoZone. It showed on the low end of the gauge, so started filling it up. After 2nd or 3rd cycle of filling (fill for a few seconds, stop and check pressure) compressor started short cycling. Stopped filling, checked pressure again and it showed low end of normal.
Compressor kept short cycling. Started driving (wanted to see if AutoZone had a set of gauges I could borrow to double check) and after about 2 minutes started getting a really loud hissing noise whenever I tried to turn the A/C on.
So, WTF did I do? Overfill and the hissing is the sound of my compressor dying because I'm a fricktard?

is the hissing noise coming from under the hood or in the dash?....sounds like a vacumn leak to me...
eta: short cycling typically means that the system is low on refrigerant...

stop working on things you havent got a clue as to how they work and why

Hood, and corresponds directly to the fan/AC being turned on - 99% sure it's the A/C, not a vacuum leak.

Don't turn it on anymore and go to a mechanic who knows what they are doing.
Or, trade it in immediately.

Did you use the right freon?
Not sure if this matters, but there must be a reason for the different types

There's only one kind for modern systems - R134a.

Needs a new Johnson rod.

none of that quick fix, miracle cure shite ever works, in many cases makes it worse

It's a recharge - I've done them at least 8 times on multiple vehicles without issue. It's not a miracle cure thing, it's simply adding more of a substance that's already present in the system, like topping off the coolant in your expansion tank.

Maybe the weakness finally became critically ill.

guess if you continued to add oil to the engine leaking/burning oil for the life of an engine there's no issue either, nothing to be repaired here, move along

You were low on freon because it leaked out. You added more and the leak/oring got worse when the pressure increased from the additional freon

except its completely not.
you only add freon if you know everything else is working perfectly. what was the high side reading on your gauge setup which tells you the most about the workings of the system. is your consenser out front completely covered in bugs and debris, is the shroud on your radiator properly sealed to prevent escaping airflow.

There was a leak. You added more pressure to the system and it will leak back out. Who knows, maybe you made the leak worse
