Can someone explain how a ref is allowed to stop an offense from hiking the ball

only to give the defense a sideline warning?!?
ECU was literally snapping the ball, and the refs stopped the mid-snap only to give VaTech a sideline warning.
Is this common practice? Has to be the worst rule in all of football. Either penalize the defense or give them a warning after the play is over, with the offense given the ability to replay the down. Just terrible.

It wasn't a penalty. It was only a warning.
The offending team was not penalized for their infraction, they were rewarded.

It's an infraction just not penalized for the first time.

I didn't see it but the rule book is clear....if anyone is in the white area or on the field when the ball is in play, it's 5 yds for the 1st two infractions and 15 yds for the third. Contact is an automatic 15 yds.

Also, when did 12 men on the defense become a dead ball foul, I thought it always used to be called after the play. See LSU vs Tennessee.

....a couple of years ago. The word from Redding was to kill the play making all "12 men" a dead ball foul

So why doesn't anyone ever call it? They always give a warning.

I'm saying I've never seen it called the first time. He's saying the rule is 5 yards first two. I believe it's the rule, just asking why it's not called that way

Oh, they do. Both the official and the coaches have a job to do and almost all the time, there's no issue. There's a lot of warnings (communication) between plays. Nobody wants to be flag happy over the sideline, so officials try to find a solution other than a flag.
Like I said, I didn't see the play, but there may have been something other than sideline interference going on.
