Another Eyeglasses/Contacts Thread

I know I posted a thread a few weeks ago about glasses and vision, etc... but I'm ready to pull the trigger and I have no idea where to start.
Can I just go to a "lenscrafters" (or something of the like) and get a prescription?
Once I have the prescription, I assume I can use the numbers anywhere (i.e. 1800contacts, etc)
Lastly, I don't have vision insurance attached to my benefits because I've NEVER needed it... how much am I looking at to handle this endeavor?
TIA

in most places you will have to get your contacts at the doctor. They give you free trials, don't be a dick. Get your refills at 800-contacts if you must.
Go to WalMart if you want to be cheap.
ETA: $200 or less for initial contacts.

If you have a Costco nearby I would make an appointment there, if you have normal prescription needs.
Their services are typically excellent and cost of eyeware is significantly less due to the fact they are not part of the luxxotica monopoly

If you are simply nearsighted, you could go to any WalMart and the doc there will be able to get you taken care of for probably around $100-$125. You'll get a trial pair and they will have ou wear them a week and have you back just to make sure they are fitting correctly and you are seeing good. At that point, the doctor will finalize the contact lens rx. You can take that anywhere you want. Walmart has pretty good prices on contacts. Can you save a couple bucks by ordering in bulk through 1800 contacts.

My contacts if I don't file with insurance are $50/box. Its 6 months worth, but you stretch it out if you take good care of them.
I know my old doc had a deal where you could get basic frames/lens for like $80. Wasn't anything special, but they're nice to have in case of emergencies.

That's what I'm asking, how much is the initial 'consult' without vision insurance...?

Idk about all that other stuff but when you do get contacts, get the new Bausch and Lomb ultras. They just came out and my optometrist switched me from accuvue hydra clear to them, Most comfortable contacts I've had

YOU SONS OF BITCHES AREN'T LISTENING TO ME... I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START...
Do I just need to call a "vision" shop? Are there "doctors" there who can write prescriptions?
I haven't EVER had to deal with ANYTHING vision related my entire life.
(Other than to make fun of kids in grade school)

Yea go to an eye clinic and tell them you're a noob.
Americas best is cheap af. It's where most uninsured folks go.
The one my insurance covers is fricking sick. Top of the line stuff and all the newest glasses styles, contact brands etc..

Yes. Call the Eye Dr. You'll look thru a lens, and he will give you a script. I always refuse the dilation. F that noise. I always buy my contacts at the Dr.

They dilate your pupils sometimes
I've never had it done though.

Any OD for your exam. They'll do the 1/2, A/B thing and you're done. Take your script, buy a cheap set of glasses, you'll want them for when your eyes are tired from your contacts. Then go to 1800 contacts and buy them there with your script.
You want at least one pair of glasses, cause you'll need something during your break in of contacts, then you'll also want them for when your eyes are just tired. I wear my lenses during the day, take them out at night and usually wear glasses on the weekends.

They do tests to measure your prescription and whatnot at an eyecare place. You'll get glasses at the place but you can get your contacts off 1-800-CONTACTS and the like once you have a script (you have to enter the glasses place's info so they can verify the script - at least in my experience).
Hence why next month I'm getting PRK, screw all this.

If you need glasses get your prescription and go to warby Parker online. Best glasses out there for the price.
