I wouldn't buy a shotgun for a single hunt...the 870 will be fine...I'd shoot low brass 2 3/4" lead #8 shot....
main thing is to get yourself geared for hot weather...go to academy and get yourself a cheap version of a fishing shirt in some drab color...also bring the following:
sunglasses (plastic lenses)
bullfrog sunscreen
disposable earplugs (some for shooting, some for sleeping)
camo pad-topped bucket or hunting stool
ETA: if your hunt is not guided, I would also bring something to put your birds in...like a cheap upland bird hunting vest...

this is a great lean 2 stool with a bag for doves
eta: also bring surgical gloves, trash bag, ziploc bags, and snips for cleaning

Certainly a bucket to sit on. I quit shooting low brass a long time ago. I shoot high brass six shot. An old duck load. And I kill a lot more birds now plus none of my guns hang up. All except my Citori hung up on low brass.
