I spent part of my childhood on the Mississippi River. I know several people, and have seen three off the top of my head, that swam across the Mississippi.
It isn't that difficult. The river doesn't have the legendary undercurrent or death whirlpools that are extremely popular in river myth.
You start on one side and understand that you'll end up on the other side a few miles down.
