so he jumps off the Eads Bridge in St. Louis and into a hole cut in the ice flow covering the Mississippi River.

I have no problem with that.

However, the Mississippi River moves at about a 3.5 mile/hour flow on average. It doesn't stop moving with a layer of ice encrusting it.

He jumps into the water, is sucked under the ice sheet, he unshackles himself, and while under the ice he proceeds to swim upriver against the current to eventually find the original hole in ice.

Ooooookay. NOt sure I can believe that.

I'll tell you one thing, the guy playing him is too tall and slender.

According to most of the OT, they all know a guy who swam across the Mississippi River no problem.

I spent part of my childhood on the Mississippi River. I know several people, and have seen three off the top of my head, that swam across the Mississippi.

It isn't that difficult. The river doesn't have the legendary undercurrent or death whirlpools that are extremely popular in river myth.

You start on one side and understand that you'll end up on the other side a few miles down.

Whether or not that happened is highly questionable. A lot of Houdini's feats were made up or sensationalized to build his legend. Several of the things presented in the biopic are not true.
