anybody got the for dummies guide on this? What do I need to buy, how do I connect it to my program guide?

if its anything like dish
step 1: buy $10 antenna from radioshack
step 2: go into program guide select 'scan for over the air channels'
step 3: you now see the new channels (in dish they're yellow instead of blue) in your guide mixed in with everything else. the program guides should also be there but if not, they should pull down during the nightly update.
change the channel to them, if they don't all lock onto the signal, don't use them.
you should get 3 or 4 strong HD channels at least OTA.

just try the $15 rabbit ears type first..minimal investment & you can just return it to radioshack if it doesn't.
not sure you need anything powered.

You need a Directv AM21 off air tuner box that connects to you DVR/Genie if you want the OTA Channels to show up in the guide and record to your DVR.

All you really have to do is plug antenna in coax port on back of tv.

New directv boxes don't have Ota port so you have to get that am21 or plug directly into your tv but no dvr or guide

If it's anything like Dish, there's also an activation fee, probably around $25.

I have an AM21 I got from Directv for free because they didn't have locals in HD when I started my service. No activation fee. You just hook it up and set it up in the menu. Don't even have to make a phone call. It's nice having OTA backup when the weather is bad. I also get all the subchannels and some locals that DTV doesn't offer.

i've never heard of that. plug in antenna, hit 'scan for OTA channels', done.
why would they charge you to get the locals OTA for emergency/rain fade potential issues?

someone said if it was bad weather these wouldn't work either b/c it goes through the directv box.
is that not true?

Works great in bad weather. I get 95% plus signal strength on all my OTA channels.

Lot of misinformation in this thread. As for using an OTA antenna with the Dish Hopper, all that's required is the $20.00 OTA module which simply plugs into a USB port. You let the Hopper scan for channels, save any you want to keep & done - the OTA channels will appear in your normal Dish guide and are easily identified by a different guide color. There is no activation fee and rain has no effect on the signal. I can't imagine being without one - OTA available throughout the home, excellent backup system, additional channels and ability to use the DVR for OTA content.

i have a vip722 and there's simply an antenna screw.
all you do is screw on antenna and his 'scan' and you're done.
i don't konw nothing 'bout no hopper and i ain't ponying up another $10/mo to try it out.

Pic of my Directv guide with AM21 hooked up. Sat channels are white & OTA channels are blue.

I upgraded from a 722 to the Hopper for no charge & no additional monthly fee? The additional features are like night & day.
