I think I've got it on track. It wouldn't take Windows 8, but I downloaded 8.1 to try, and with the bios set for it, it's letting me format/reinstall OS.
Are MTU issues more common in 8 than 7? In thinking back, I had another similar problem come in a month back. No browsing with wireless, wired was fine. DNS on that one wouldn't work for anything though, different from this one. A format worked on it though, Geek Squad had told the poor fellow his wireless was defective and that he'd need to send it in for repair.

I don't know anything about 8 vs 7, and honestly I haven't personally seen an MTU problem in years, but that set of symptoms -- ping works, DNS works, browse doesn't -- set off some dim and dusty memories. That's also something in the TCP stack (and local infrastructure) that could plausibly be different between wired and wireless.
