He was isolated, off-campus, and asocial. Likely on drugs and/or depressed. That's the main impression I can glean. And a far more plausible and simpler explanation than any of this other conspiracy bullshite.

So were quite a few others. He still attended individual classes 2-3 times a week and none of them would be that large considering how small the political science population was. People would have noticed him.

Let's not forget that the Columbia campus is not a normal college campus: NYC is not a college town. It's not inconcievable that he didn't want to hang out with a bunch of prep school kids at the normal college bars when he could go to a communist bar or hang out in Harlem.
That being said, it is highly unusual for a the most powerful political figure in the world to be a wallflower. Especially for someone with so much apparent charisma and charm.
