Really? I didn't watch Bilbao a ton but when I saw them I thought Itarraspe was always DM and Herrera defended well, tackled in their pressing but was usually the further forward of the midfield three.

I always thought he was an impressive player but never thought of him as anything other than an advanced or, at best, box to box midfielder?

All three played at left back. They all may work out swimmingly in the end but Shaw is very young and the other two aren't particularly proven elite guys or even ones that had many other top teams burning down bridges to get to them.

That's why people are probably questioning the vastly different expenditures / experience level on the defensive side of the market compared with Di Maria and Falcao in attack.
