While I agree with your statement, vicerally, I'm trying to pinpoint actual "true believers" who've led a major party ticket in the past 50 years (i.e., post JFK).

Obama? W? Gore? Mondale? Reagan? Carter? McGovern? Humphrey? Goldwater? If all of these are, then you have 1 in every race, except HW versus Clinton. And a number of TBs v. TBs (W v. Gore, Reagan v. Mondale, Reagan v. Carter)

Certainly not LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Dukakis, HW, Clinton, Dole, Kerry, McCain or Romney.
