Yeah! Africa was doing great before Europeans arrived and introduced that silly idea of reading and writing.

Who is to say they were bad off without that?

So just because they were illiterate and lived in huts it was okay to completely destroy their way of life? But don't worry some of them can read now.

Human history is a quest of for control of resources. Certain European peoples, the Japanese, and in modern history, Americans, have simply been better at it.

Yeah, what kind of naif expects America to hold itself to a higher standard than Leopold and Tojo?

Aside from the printing press, steam engine, automobile, airplane, space travel, personal computers, medical cures & treatment for all manners of diseases, freedom of speech/association/religion et al, and many other things that have allowed mankind to live longer, healthier and more-prosperous lives, what really has "The West" done for mankind? I suppose we'd all be better off living in some manner of global caliphate.

Well, you left out a lot of stuff like great art, music, literature, philosophy, modernism (as opposed to Classical and post mod), etc. But we could go on forever. Western culture is a TEN. Islam is a ZERO. They are 500 years behind and they know they're not going to live long enough to catch up.

Africa is 1,000 years behind. If you think they're going to catch up just invest some money in the Somali Pirates and see how your stock goes.

And that whole "work for me forever without any pay" thing

so the current practice of taking kids and forcing them into the army is different and makes africans less culpable for their own problems? ...

and the africans that sold rival tribe members to the europeans for enslavement don't share any culpability, either? ...

Indirectly...

it's the West's failure to maintain control of its colonies coupled with the collapse if the USSR that has caused this.

Yes, a lot but not all problems and largely European imperialism-- shite like say Sykes-Picot in the Middle East were freaking disastrous as was Versailles, and the various African country groupings that only serve to increase conflict.

Totally wrong. The major reason why colonization of the third world failed was network TV banning Tarzan Movies.

This is what a typical African family should look like to prosper:

Afghanistan and Iraq would agree whole heartedly.

Of course Western imperialism is the root of many of the world's problems. How is this even debatable?

The folks that control this country are not nice. They don't play. Millions murdered or displaced in the Middle East is a testament to that.

Western Imperialism, which really means British Imperialism, simply won out. Had Spain not sent itself into economic collapse in the 16th century or Napoleon not tried to invade Moscow, we'd be talking about how the Spanish and French "ruined" the world. Prior to European imperialism, there was the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Prior to them the Greeks, Persians, and Assyrians. Prior to them the Egyptians and Mesopotamians.

In 200 years, humans may be under the control of the Chinese or a Western hegemony, or god forbid a one world government, and the people on the bottom rung will blame it for all their ills.

To quote a batshite crazy guy I used to enjoy reading, I think this gets at some of it:

quote:

The US economy, driven by a fiat currency, fractional reserve banking, debt-based financing –- and “doped” with the billions of dollars of drug profits laundered through its corporations and banks –- is a superheated pyramid scheme of infinite growth wherein 5% of the world’s population consumes 25% of the world’s energy and a totally disproportionate share of the world’s diminishing resources and commodities.

And they would have a point. No empire has ever been established with the commoners in mind.

When you take control of the world, you are responsible for the misery of the people at the bottom because, well, you're in control and they're not.

It's a simple tautology.

And to those who think we're so good at it, why are so many on the board so scared of third world islamic terrorists? Apparently we're not as good at it as we'd like to think.

PLUS, when you introduce the Green Revolution, and the 'miracle drugs' to neolithic people, all in the name of creating markets, are you not responsible for the problems caused by the population explosion?

The West hasn't really done Imperialism for a while now. Now if we do do anything we 'Nation Build'.

I think ALL imperialism is the root of many of the world's problems, not just Western imperialism. There's no doubt that Israel is the product of Western imperialism, but what's going on in Syria and Iraq today is largely the result of Saudi and Iranian imperialism. When nations meddle in the internal affairs of other nations for selfish reasons, often times bad things happen.
