There is already a big buzz about the sport after the World Cup. Donovan for most people, especially those who haven't kept up with the team since the 2010 cup, has always been the figurehead/main star of both MLS and US soccer. His retirement has ridden the World Cup buzz and now people want to see the guy play before he retires. More butts in seats. More people picking MLS teams as "their team." I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm hoping for the galaxy to make a good run in the playoffs this year. It will generate even more buzz: "Zomg will this be Donovan's last game? Watch tonight to know the answer!" Plus at the same time you have people interested in watching certain guys play- guys like Bradley, Beasley, Beckerman, Zusi, Gonzo, Zusi, Wondo, and Yedlin (while they can). They are there to pick up the slack. It sucks to lose a guy who has been so influential to the growth of soccer in this country, sure, but the timing of it all is pretty alright.

Well said. And next season, I think new soccer folks here are going to want to see what all happens with NYCFC.

I never thought about it like this, but I agree.

He's not going to be retired for long. I think it's way to early for him. He will be back in about a year, and playing for San Jose.

I think this is good for the growth of the sport. Hopefully the "World Cup High" lasts until the next one.

The next coming months should be huge. If the soccer buzz can survive football, then it will be the longest soccer has been this mainstream.

Yeah, I guess it's interesting and dramatic to the newer soccer spectators. Never really cared about seeing the guy play, although he was boss in the short time he was at Everton.

You make some really good points though.
