It's a good town. Lakeview and downtown have plenty to do.

I went to Bham earlier this month and the southside area is wonderful...lots of stuff in walking distance and its pretty vibrant..not sure what part you are moving to though.

Birmingham as in Birmingham or one of the suburbs?

If actual Birmingham, I suggest:

Update wills & life insurance policies.
Body armor
At least one mean dog
Guns & ammo. Lots and lots of ammo.

Oh, also an extended life battery for playing on your phone while standing in line for your car tags and a high limit credit card for paying your sewer bill.

Birmingham is not as bad as people say, but the Mexican food in that area is terrible.

The best areas in Birmingham are Southside (Highland Av area), Downtown (lofts), Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia. There's a lot of nice apartments available on the Hwy 280 corridor, but the traffic sucks. If you can afford Mountain Brook, I'd recommend it - it's pretty, safe, and close to pretty much everything worthwhile in the Bham area. Lots of chain resturants/bars along Hwy 280, with all the best indepedent resturants Downtown, Southside, Homewood, and Mountain Brook. Bham has four breweries all near Downtown...Good People, Cahaba, Trim Tab, and Avondale. You'll have fun in Birmingham...
