OT Airline Experts: miss departing flight, can you still board return flight?

Got flight to Houston for the game in a couple of weeks. My flight takes off Friday morning. Something came up today, and I have some business to do in Houston Wednesday and Thursday. I figured a change fee and price difference would be very expensive. I'm thinking about renting a car to Houston and using my return flight. Is that possible? I seem to remember someone saying they cancel your return if you miss the departing flight.

I would call the airline and tell them you plan to only use the return leg, maybe see if they can squeeze you in a middle seat in the back for the leg there.
I just got ticket to NYC (EWR) today at $179 one way for Saturday.
(SWA wanted $409)
You could probably still get a ticket for less than a car rental.

No. Once you miss any leg of your flight by your own will (non-airline delay) the remainder of your trip is canceled. You will be refunded in the form of an airline credit the value of the ticket, less $200.
If this is southwest, you can change your flight to only the return for no fee.

Damn. It is United. I haven't called them yet to see what the change would cost me....figured I would be getting raped. Also figured the all knowing OT would have some good suggestions.

I'd see if you could catch a ride with someone and then fly back.

I damn sure wouldn't risk it...mess around with an airline and you can end up having a very shitty day...
I would call them and see what the deal is and then make changes as necessary...

I would contact the airline, change fee likely will be less than a car and car drop off in another city.

Call and see what it would be to cancel the outbound. If you paid around $400 it'll likely come out to a wash and you'll get to keep the return.
Bottom line is you've got to do all before your outbound.

I will call them and see what my options are. Thanks for all the input.

I would verify charges with car rental agency as well to compare. Pick up in one city and drop off in another usually carries a steep premium.

There are plenty of rental car codes out there for the various companies that waive one-way drop fees and don't charge per mile.

You can cancel the first segment of the flight if you wish. However, the airline will recalculate the cost of the now one way ticket based on today's price.

Skip this supposed " business in Houston" and stick to the original plan. Don't complicate things unless it's just unavoidable.

They also usually have rules preventing you from buying a new one way return ticket if it matches the same route back, that way forcing you to pay their re-booking fees if you want to change your return date/time.
Good luck

My girlfriend overslept and missed her flight two weeks ago. They put her on a later flight for no charge, but it cancelled her return flight, which she did not find out until arriving at the airport to fly home. They put her on an even more convenient flight for no charge.
This doesn't help you, but I still can't believe it happened considering how stringent airlines are.

What happened to her is the "flat tire" flight change. Most airlines/agents know this stuff happens: over sleeping, car trouble, interstate closed, etc. and will be moderately flexible in rebooking with availability.
What happened with her return flight was simply an IT/agent error when they rebooked her on the flight and didn't reinstate the original return flight.

Which is why Southwest is always the best option when you are paying for the flight!

Meh. They lost their pricing edge when their fuel hedge ran out, they don't have first class/premium seating, have horrible on-time performance, holes in their airplanes, and I get free checked bags on united and delta sooooo...

Don't forget the boarding procedure and no assigned seats
