Use pendrivelinux to create the bootable USB.

Then post the model of your laptop for additional instruction. Korktand's post is spot on, but getting your pc to boot from USB will be a challenge for you without details for your model pc.

Holy over-complication batman...
Download the full iso of whatever distro you want. now download poweriso, its free. insert at least a 4gb USB drive and create the bootable usb with poweriso. its one of the more simple iso programs there are so ill leave finding the "create bootable usb" button up to you. after all that, boot from the usb and follow the on screen instructions. any distro other than gentoo is just as easy to install as windows.
