I'm fine with cutting some academic programs that don't pull their weight or have any real future. I think it is stupid to bitch about a huge stadium renovation when all the money comes from private donations and that athletic department even dumps millions of dollars back into the academic side. It is silly to say we could have redid these buildings instead of built a new addition to the stadium because the stadium addition didn't take any funds from other buildings. IMO during tougher economic times I'm ok with diverting funds from bad majors and putting them into breadwinners for the university. Then when times are good again we could expand the majors offered, or a alum can step up and save a major if its on the chopping block.

Do you think it's nuts that our athletic department can collect so many more "private donations" than the university itself?

Sure, at the end it comes down to people's personal priorities.... where they want to put their dollars. That's more or less what I'm getting at. People care more about athletics. They just do.
