What if federal politicians had to have restrictions on property rights?

I am contemplating a better government. What if upon election to congress, the politician had to give up all private property and from then on til his death, he lived on a reasonable government check? But that this all he could ever earn, or be given. Basically, eliminate any possibility of bribe.
Has anyone here ever read of such an idea? If so, please direct me to it.

Would never happen because the people who vote on that are the ones your trying to take away from. I do t think they will go for it.
The idea itself is fair, but logistically it wouldn't work.

It's already been done. The Clintons left the White House dead broke.

By capping what he can legally earn?

What about a spouse's property?
Also, consider: if everything had to be given up forever, you might see a lot fewer successful people & people of high-caliber running for office.

I get that. It would have to part of the constitution of the country, something the law makers can't change.

Government check for politician, spouse, kids.
Do you like the high quality character people we have in congress now? Reducing the self interest of a congress position just might get higher quality people.

Why would I want my representatives to be essentially officers of the state. I would prefer my representatives to own property, have run businesses, etc. This system would quickly degenerate into a bunch of jealous bureaucrats screwing with those that do possess property.

Your contention is that people who choose this life of restricted property rights in order to serve their country, would latter regret it and then take it out on their constituents by restricting their property rights?

I am more in the camp of going back to it being part time and only paid per diem. Why do they need to be in DC working year round? Do we not already have enough laws? Make it to where they can't get filthy rich being a politician.

The big problem isn't the politicians. It's the idiot electorate.
I'd LOVE to see a 5 question civics test on each ballot. The number you get right determines the value of your vote. This way, dumb-asses won't have nearly the political clout they have now.

Not really.

That seems unlikely, as it will be a less attractive professional option for capable people. At best this is a gamble that could easily result in an even worse outcome. The fact that our leadership now is generally unpopular is not a justification for a solution that could be worse than the problem.

Having property of your own is one hell of a motivator to care about property rights in general.

If you think you have the way to fix this, I am all ears.
My point is that if you can fix the system, the people in the system will perform better.

I hear you on that.
My retort is that currently, our government only cares about THEIR property rights. Ex. Making up some endangered animal as justification to build a Chinese factory which will make a congressman's son rich.

I'm serious about the civics test on each ballot. As cliche as it is, we do get what we vote for. The problem is that dummies have the exact same say as informed voters.

Remove party designation on ballot, allow voter recall , sunset all laws.
