Totally agree. Some technical pointers early doesn't mean he's gluing a golf club to the kid's hand at 18 months and going Gravy Train Earl Woods on him.

This shite is funny. I let my boy go out do whatever he wants. The only thing I ever showed him was to have his right hand low ( right handed golfer) on the grip. Sometimes he takes a backswing and sometimes he just pushes it. I don't care as long as he is smiling.

Lol at forming bad habits at 7. C'mon man.
I'm so pissed at my dad because of that time I developed that bad habit swinging the club at 3. Damn him. I'm still trying to fix that.

Make him wear a hat with a tiny hole in it. Put a string with a fish hook on it and put it gently in his belly button. Kid will only pull his head up during a swing once.

He'd smile more if you'd teach him some things that would make him better.

If you play a sport a lot, you form bad habits regardless of age.

Baw, he's 7. Don't worry about distance. That will come. Have him sharpen that short game up. That will stick with him the rest of his life.

No no you don't. You don't have muscle memory at a young age. Lol. U barely have coordination.

We have 3 7 year olds in our d1 national jr team right now. They are in their second class of d1 and we still have to teach the same fundamentals. Grip posture stance. Make contact.

And I think you're an idiot for laughing at teaching a kid how to properly play a sport.

Showing him some proper form doesn't mean you are being overbearing.

At 7 years old, yes you do. At 7, 8, 9, etc. years old there are kids playing baseball making diving catches and throwing with good form.

Kids do have muscle memory and coordination.

Ok, I am an idiot. I am cool with that. However, I have been around golf for quite a while and also have at least one PGA professional here also saying to let them go. However, I am sure you are right on this.

You can find different opinions from different professionals on virtually any topic.

I'm not saying you have to be a drill sergeant or teach anything complex.

But giving him one thing to practice at a time will help. Maybe that's keeping his head down. Maybe it's teaching him a proper grip.

Something.

I find the idea that you can't teach a 7 year old anything to be silly.

I developed my diving catches from muscle memory. It's different in baseball. You grow and that doesn't really effect you. It effects you a ton in golf. Like I said. Let him make contact with the ball. Swing hard. Then next year you can start with coaching. Very easy coaching.

Nobody said u can't teach. It's the fact teaching certain things means nothing. Grip posture stance hit ball.

If you want take a look at the top jr golfers from Asia, Mexico, and others and see the ones who won a ton early then stopped playing once high school came. It's a ton of them. They were taught too early and they got worn out.

1. Proper form is proper form whether it is golf or baseball. As you grow, you'll have to adjust, but you already have the fundamentals down.

2. Why start coaching next year? And it doesn't even have to be "coaching". People in this thread are acting like it's bad to give him some pointers when they are out hitting at the range.
