Why didn't the eagles just meet them somewhere instead of making the group walk way the frick?

could eagles penetrate Mordor when it's armies are at full strength?
Remember that the volcano was erupting when the eagles got frodo and sam, the group was literally crumbling beneath their feet. They weren't in a position to attack the eagles.

Just like the ent's didn't care about the affairs of men and elves. I suspect the eagles are the same. The eagles help Gandolf because he is a friend.

It's been mentioned, but remember, too, that the eagles are demi-gods and not required to engage in anything mortals deal with.
