a cool tour would be to go to all of the major sites of the Civil War in the order in which they happened.

One of these days I'm going to take a long vacation and visit in order the battlefields my Ggggrandfather fought (or was at least present) on. Starts at First Manassas and ends at Spottsylvania Courthouse.

Appo is a great place. I would t recommend it but that is because I live 10 mins away. As states Richmond might would be a better bet if you want history. But if you come up this way I gave you some good places to eat about 30 mins away from Appomattox

That's cool you know which battles he was in. I've been trying to figure out which battles my relatives fought. They were out of Mississippi. I know their regimens and such, but I can't figure out which battles they fought. I usually start to research it and then hit a dead end.

I'd love to go to Richmond, but I don't think I'll have time this trip.

I'm taking a solo road trip to do some hiking/backpacking and I thought I could throw in some Civil War stuff along the way.

I'm starting in Grayson Highlands down by Damascus then heading to Shenandoah National Park. I figured I could hit Appomattox along the way since it's a relatively short detour.

Any recommendations on places to eat, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most definitely worth it. There are a good bit of battlefields to visit, besides Appomattox: Spotslvania, Fredericksburg, Richmond, Petersburg, to name a few. All worth the visit.

You should be able to tell from the unit histories. If those are not detailed enough, you can try asking the guys here: LINK

There's bound to be someone that can give, or direct, you to better information. In my case, I ran across a guy writing a book about my ancestor's regiment; he had done so much research that he had every member of the regiment's service record. That's how I found out Ggggrandad was hit in the leg in the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania and put out of the War.

Just to be where World War I started would be really cool.

That's awesome. Thanks a lot. I'm checking this link out now and looks like I already found some stuff.

Zee Nuts, I am also only 10 mins away from Appo. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a fellow Tigers fan.
