We are expecting our first in September and putting nervous, scared, etc aside. How tough are the little guys/gals?
What am I in for in the first year?
It's a girl BTW.
if you are a guy, how ready is your wife for this? does she seem like she'd be a good mother?
i always thought my wife would be. we have two girls now and my wife is a way better mother than i ever expected. makes being a father that much easier.
it's like playing with Jordan. and i don't even have to be Pippen i have to be like Horace Grant.
but to answer your question, the first 2-3 weeks are horrible. the nexttwo to three slightly better and it gets better after that.
no one tells you the first few weeks that it will get better. you will sleep again. i promise.
edit: my girls are 5 and 3 now and are a delight. i miss some of those baby days especially like 6 mos thru a yr.

I found the first 6 weeks to be the hardest. There is always a new challenge though. Just when you get through one phase there is a whole new issue you have to start dealing with. Mine is now walking and trying to feeding himself. It is fun to watch, but it means he can get into a lot more trouble and is usually covered in food by the end of the day.

If you plan on being a good parent, it's tough. How tough will depend on the child though, health issues, temperament, sleeping habits will all factor in. Also, how much help you get from your family is a big factor too. My family and my wife's family both never help. We are lucky to get a night every seven weeks off. By contrast I have a friend who every Fri/Sat, their parents take the kids, so they have more children than I'm willing to given my situation.
The biggest thing is that everything you have come to know will end. You will now only see your friends about 1/3 as often. Your only time to yourselves will be after bed time, but before you fall asleep, which have to be close or you won't get any sleep. It's worth it though. You get to get on Ebay and get all the toys again that you had as a kid and buy them "for the kid".
