I have an American Bulldog as well, he's almost 10 years old and he received some very harsh discipline as a puppy. No matter how hard he got popped, he never whimpered, he never sulked, and hell, he never really gave any indication that he felt anything. The breed really is a bunch of knotheads.
He's the gentlest, most laid back dog I've ever owned. He let's my 3 year old niece climb all over him, pull his ears, and pull his tail. He doesn't jump on people and he isn't aggressive to other animals.
I believe that the firm hand I used when he was a puppy showed him where he stands in the hierarchy, and he's never forgotten it.
Tell the wife to suck it up.
