It goes back further than that even.

It used to mean a bond until death. This is why when the King wanted your wife for his harem, he had to kill you. Life was rough back then.

he is talking about divorce not marriages between man and man or women and women.

Just a note: there is no such thing as divorce in the Catholic Church rather the church sees that the sacrament was invalid so no marriage ever took place.

You really think marriage was originally defined by the bible?
