IMO, this issue is like a three dimensional problem we are looking at through two dimensional lenses.
I believe there is WAY more to what Jesus taught than we have gleaned through the 2+ thousand years we've studied Him.

Honestly I think if we could go back in time and understand his language and listen to Jesus preach, we'd come away impressed with his charisma but disappointed with the message. I think its likely he was one of many people in that place and time claiming to be messiah, and his main goal was not to start a new religion but to purge the corrupt Jewish temple and ultimately throw off the roman yoke.
