Miami. English gets you nowhere

San Francisco. The architecture, the people, the politics, the neighborhoods - It's so much of a beachy, Pacific, and Asian culture that I felt like I had entered another country when I went.
Bet it was culture shock for small-town boy like you. Sure San Francisco is liberal but it's wealthy America to the core. What about the architecture is so foreign? It's not even THAT beachy like SoCal and it's so expensive only Asians and wealthy tech guys live there. Which makes it great.

Middle Easterners in that area isn't a new phenomenon -- the TV star Danny Thomas (Lebanese) was born there before WWI, and every MASH fan knows Jamie Farr aka Jameel Farah (Lebanese) is from nearby Toledo.
I remember reading that there were 100K Arabs in Detroit in the 1970s, and there are only more now. Dearborn is supposedly dominated by Muslims.

Not exactly what you're asking, but when I attended my newcomers briefing at Ft Polk in Leesville, the Commanding General's welcome started with, "Ft Polk is like being stationed overseas, there's nothing close so you have to drive a good distant to do anything and the locals don't speak very good English".
I thought that was pretty funny.
