If they are hardwired to your new router, set them as Access Points, not extenders. Extenders will cut your bandwidth in half, but don't require a hardwire. APs will get your full bandwidth but requires a hardwire. Put one on channel 1, another on channel 6 and the other on channel 11.

how hard is it to set the devices as access points?

plug and play or a lot of configuring?
an issue I have is that the router had a password put in its configurations and I can't remember it.
