I lived in Anchorage.
Eskimos is considered offensive...nobody says Eskimo except for new Lower 48 transplants who don't know any better.
Everyone says "Native" or Alaskan Native. The Natives say Native.
"Eskimos" (Native Alaskans) get zero coverage in the Lower 48 so everyone is ignorant...and the some of the racism in Alaska regarding them is shocking...and would get huge coverage in the Lower 48 if it were another racial group - but it gets little news coverage because Natives are the tiniest of tiny minorities.

The logical conclusion, in my mind, is that native americans are much less worried about that term than white folks are. in fact, at least a reasonable sized contingent of them see it as a term to take pride in.
I think it is definitely overblown.
A recent study on it found otherwise though:

The Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies at California State University, San Bernardino has conducted
a study on racial and ethnic perspectives on the team name Redskins and associated issues, and found
that the large majority of American Indians, when properly identified and polled, find the team name
offensive, disrespectful and racist.

if you used google to find that study you had to omit several entries of studies that found the exact opposite. this is not an issue that a single poll will give you an accurate representation.
apparently a lot of it has to do with where the tribe is from

Right, but those studies came under criticism because they did not verify that the people surveyed were actually native americans.
This is the study that the Redskins organization refereed to along with CBS and other sports stations:

Didn't you just try to argue against that point?

there are multiple polls with multiple results. its also not surprising that a group with an opposing view would attack the methodology when they dont like the results.

not at all. i compared native americans to other minorities that are from different places and have different views - you dont think all hispanics are the same do you? turns out not everything south of texas and north of brazil is called "mexico". shocking, i know.
regardless of their differences though, blacks and Hispanics basically universally view certain terms as racist and should only be used (if ever) by friends. certainly never in a official or semi official environment.
the same cannot be said about Redskins. it simply cant, no matter how much some white folks want it to be.

Link them
Also, the study the Redskins poll claimed that it did not vary based on tribe.

The organization who ran the survey said it isn't an accurate portrayal.

So it isn't a racial slur if the entire population doesn't agree with it?
I've already said I don't think that the Redskins should change the name. That doesn't mean it doesn't have a history as a racial slur. Context is important.

when?
as of last year they were still touting the results

how can it be a racial slur if the community "affected" by it cant agree that it is? not only that, we arent talking about being ambivalent to the term - but some reasonably large percentage of the population literally taking pride in the term.

Hey Jeaux, Eskimo is an outdated name, it means 'meat eater' or something similar, and in Canada they prefer Inuit now, it was never considered especially perjorative but they constantly refer to 1st nations people that live in the far north as Inuit now...

That is why I thought people would want the Edmonton to do any with it.

Seriously.
I am offended every time I hear American Indians being referred to as "Native Americans".
It is incorrect, and offensive to EVERY person born on this continent.

People sometimes give me grief over slavery (being from La.) but if you want to get on a Canadians nerves ask em' about the residential schools for 1st nations kids were like thousands were tortured to make them more European and the missing hundreds of little kids...Eskimos is the least of their shameful past...here in Nova Scotia the former Gov. had a bounty on every 1st nations man woman or child...

Honestly I think it has more to do with the logos than anything. The Eskimos have two E's, lot different than the Redskins.
Canadians seem to get far less bent out of shape over these things than Americans do.
