John Stossel agreeing with Bill Maher

Government always grows, and government is force. Force is always dangerous.
It's healthy for conservatives, libertarians and liberals alike to worry about the militarization of police. Conservatives worry about a repeat of incidents like the raids on religious radicals at Ruby Ridge and Waco, Texas. Liberals condemn police brutality like the recent asphyxiation death of a suspect at the hands of police in New York.
This is a rare issue where I agree with left-wing TV host Bill Maher. On his TV show last week, Maher ranted about no-knock raids "breaking up poker games, arresting low-level pot dealers."
Maher's right to point out that most SWAT raids are now done to arrest nonviolent drug offenders. "It's a guy who sells weed," says Maher. "You don't need to shoot his dog and crash through his window."
Policing America - John Stossel
Stossel has a special this weekend on Fox, 'Policing America'. He's focusing on local yokel SWAT operations. Good for him. I hope he brings some attention to this dangerous trend.

I agree 100%. SWAT call-outs used to be rare occurrences, but are now used for too many unpaid parking tickets.

This is one of the little talked about side effects of 9/11. The downward flow of government money to local LEO's to help combat terrorism creating psuedo military units.
And just like Stossel points out, these units use their new goodies to serve no knock raids for low level drug crimes so they can beg for more DOJ funding for the war on drugs.

100% truth... I don't see how anyone can disagree with this statement.

What else are they supposed to do with all their toys?

Any updates on the flash grenade incident in Georgia?

I was listening to Mark Levin the other night when somebody brought up the subject of the Texas National Guard not having some of the equipment they needed to patrol the border. Levin's comment was the TNG would have the necessary stuff if the military quit giving it to local police departments.

If they're a police officer or married to one, they disagree pretty strongly. Everything needs to be some so that they can "come home safely."

Using that type of armor probably guarantees your job is more dangerous, not less. It only stirs up more animosity in the community.

It's not very often that I agree with Maher, but this is one of those times.

This is a topic where liberals and constitutional republicans find common ground on. I'm in the military and hate seeing police forces wearing gear that I wear in combat zones. Our government has probably labeled myself and men like me as "a potential terrorist." I hate the fact that America has an "army" that operated on US soil. I agree with Maher on this.

That got us into a lot of trouble in the early stages of the Iraq war. The "Surge" was basically a massive community policing effort and it worked. At least until we left. But violence came almost to a standstill.

There's another guy here who was a Green Beret. He's never actually come out and said it but I'm pretty sure he was. He's a Bama fan though so he still sucks. I don't give a damn how many terrorists he's killed.

Post-Boston Bombing was a perfect example of the over reach... Para military armed officers storming their way into houses when they had no suspicion at all that the bomber was in there. Just that theres a chance he could be
And what cracked the case? An observant home owner, but at least they got to play with their toys for a few hours.

I don't give a shite if he served on a team with me. Bama is still my #1 enemy.
