Those math examples aren't part of Common Core. They are part of a curriculum known as "Everyday Math" (aka Fuzzy Math) which is sold to local school districts as a curriculum to meet Common Core math objectives. It would be like if reaching a certain point was mandated by the state and someone bought a Yugo to do that and then suddenly the mandate is interpreted as everyone has to buy a Yugo. Does that make sense?

The horrible math problems you've seen are not a result of Common Core. That curriculum has been around for a while.
