Yes. It was common for a mentor to have sex with a pupil, but a grown, gay couple would have been seriously frowned upon.

Also, companionship was very important to ancient people, and female companionship was not desired. This is why Alexander gets accused of being gay. He was no gayer than Gilgamesh, who also had a famous companion.

you do know that The Epic of Gilgamesh is fiction right? He and Ankeedu (sp?) didn't really kill the bull of heaven, and a mythical forest monster together

i will add yet another tidbit of information to this thread about gay sex in ancient times - it was typically not penetrative. a few posters have pointed out that the "catchers" were considered effeminate. as such, gay sex tended to be intercrural, or between the thighs.
