Can Rand Bring Blacks Back to the GOP?

Fifty years after Goldwater, the Kentucky Senator is trying to repair the GOP's image with African-American voters.
James Poulos

Fifty years ago this week, a divided and feverish Republican Party nominated Barry Goldwater to lead them to victory. Instead, he led them to a smashing defeat.
There are many reasons for that catastrophe, and some on the right enjoyed a hearty last laugh when Lyndon Johnson abandoned the White House. But ridding themselves of Johnson did not mean that Republicans got back the black vote. Black Americans deserted the Goldwater GOP en masse, and they never came back—not even in the party’s ultra-dominant Reagan years. To be sure, the Reaganaut Jack Kemp made African Americans a powerful pitch. But Kemp belongs to a different time, and that time has now been long in passing.
Now it’s fallen to Rand Paul to revive his party’s standing with black Americans. After the splashy performances that sealed his reputation (a filibuster here, a standing ovation at Berkeley there), Paul has settled into something of a grind as the rest of the GOP’s presumptive presidential contenders take turns trying to cement themselves as the party’s antithesis to all things Paul.
Most recently, that’s meant a public poking contest between Paul and Rick Perry over the merits and demerits of Barack Obama’s Iraq policy, such as it is. Their dueling opinion columns crystallized the party’s central conflict: re-litigating the Bush legacy at large.

Senator Rand Paul Is Not Afraid of Black People
Roland S. Martin

There is no white Republican elected official today who is coming close to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's effort to reach out to black voters.
When the GOP opened an outreach office in Detroit, Paul was there. Earlier this month, he spoke about education reform to a group of African-Americans. Last year, Paul gave a speech at historically black university, Howard University, where he owned up to the party's failure to connect with black voters. And he has taken positions that have irked some in the GOP, including discussing voter suppression efforts and the failures of mandatory minimums in the criminal justice system.
What Paul is doing is not going to these venues and waving the GOP flag. He's raising issues that are in the wheelhouse of black voters and, at least, getting them to listen to his perspective.
Critics, namely hardcore Democrats, see Paul as nothing more than a charlatan trying to bolster his credentials in advance of a 2016 presidential run. OK, fine. Maybe that is the case. But black voters can't on one hand say Democrats take us for granted, and then when a white Republican extends his hand, we can't cut it off.

10-15% max. Blacks will never vote for any White that cuts advantageous programs for their race. Just like most Whites won't vote against a 'Thad Cochran' who brings home the (QE) bacon to them.
But he may do some societal good re race relations. Hell, it can only go up after Obama/Holder; since they've put us in the place of one economic collapse away from going over the race-war edge.

And just look how blacks in America thrived.

They have closed ears, and a hand out. It doesn't matter if Republican fight to free them of the Democratic shackles(like Lincoln), they will always be dependent on their slaves masters to provide for them. Now, they aren't all like that, but if anyone can peel 15-20 percent of the educated/free thinking ones away, its Rand...

Probably a little off-topic ... but I am aware of Rand Paul's medical career...and, in my opinion, he is a smart fellow.
(Not this BS smart that was lavished upon Obama just because he went to Ivy league and such ... I think we can all see now that Obama is not that smart.)
But ... what has Rand Paul actually RUN (and I don't view a medical practice that same as, say ... a more conventional business).
And ... the way folks talk about him on here ... we don't need to replace one so-called Messiah with another.
What we need is a practical/common sense man (yeah, a man ... I said it) ... who can actually LEAD, RUN things, be the HMFIC...show some accountability and demand it.
I'm not convinced that Rand Paul is that guy.

Not convinced either, still watching all these guys. If Rand is a MD, though, he's probably good at management, and has to be good at running thing to stay profitable in these times. His biggest hurdle IMO is Foreign Policy, but that's going to be a hurdle for anyone, esp if our last Sec of State runs, she looks to have been a disaster, so that void seem to be open, and I don't know if Rand is THAT guy...Time/debates will tell..

Reagan was an actor. He just knew how to lead. He also did not have an agenda to radically change the country from its foundation.
I see Rand in this light

I attended an annual meeting of the Airport Minority Contactor's Association a few years back. Roland Martin was the keynote speaker. He makes his living perpetuating minority injustice stories, peppered with anecdotes. If he actually wrote about the news and reported facts instead of continual reporting of racial injustice, he might be a pretty decent columnist and reporter. As he is, though, he is just another race-mongerer and I consider him no better than Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, even if he isn't as strident as they are. That's too bad because he actually is very talented speaker and writer. A one trick pony, though.

Sure, all he has to do is explain to the blacks how the Democrats have been duping them for so long. THat's sure to gain votes.
Posted on 7/19/14 at 9:10 am to RollTide4Ever
Yeah he could peel off 5% if he stays the course. I'd like to say that black unemployment would help, but with all the programs in place to pay for them to stay that way, who the hell knows? But 3-5% gets the job done, IMO. If the dems don't throw up a black candidate, then the stay at home bunch should make victory possible.

So him writing this is astounding. Barry Goldwater must be smiling from heaven right now.

The CBC supported the war on drugs, Ron Paul got into an argument with Charles Rangel on the Morton Downey show.

Obama has turned out to be abysmal and it can no longer be denied by Dems. Only hardcore loyalists stand up for Obama. He had the potential to make sweeping changes to this country by focusing on the black family unit. Instead, he's focused on transforming America into a refugee's utopia.

That would have been Romney. Man is loaded already. Smart, efficient and honest. Spent much of his life giving, because of his Religion. Believes in Capitalism.
What kind of leader we need will be determined by the CONDITIONS when the time arrives. Might need Allen West.

The GOP's only chance is to put up a candidate the base supports. I think Paul, Walker, Carson, Cruz would work.
Bush, Rubio, Cristy, Romney would not carry the base. I agree Romney would have been perfect, but if he can't get as many votes as McLame, then he's finished.

Roland Martin's comments should be encouraging to Paul since he's a typical, orthodox, left-wing Black journalist who usually locksteps with the Democratic party, not a Black conservative, a la Thomas Sowell, by any stretch of the imagination. Also encouraging are recent comments by MSNBC's Joy Reid, another Black liberal, who said that there's no doubt in her mind that Paul's Black outreach efforts are sincere. It's one thing for Black conservatives to praise a Republican politician, but when Black liberals start doing it, you know he's onto something.
