These things have radar target detection from what I can tell.
The size and speed of the target for a civilian airliner would be a lot fricking bigger and slower than a fighter.
It would likely be a lot faster than a Ukrainian military cargo plane, too, if it is a 777.
I have no idea, lot of these things are speculation.

I'm not aiming this at you as much as pointing out potential holes in the story.
I don't doubt that the Russians or the separatists in Eastern Ukraine shot down the plane. I'm just parsing whatever explanation they give.
