What's going on with my palm tree?

The trunk of my palm tree started rotting a few days ago and seems to be getting progressively worse. What is going on and is there anything I can do to save the tree?

After the fronds get trimmed was someone trying to weave them into a pattern? I have 17 palms and they include various kinds but I have never seen a pattern like the one on your palm. You are severely overdue for a trimming but I'm sure you knew that.

Trim it trim it trim it.
Thats the way those fronds, split at the trunk when they die.
To see if its still alive, get up top and check for new growth, (no fun), or dig around the bottom for the roots.
If the roots are all dried up and dead.........then, but if they are wet, green and tough, the tree is prolly fine.

I have a Canary Island Date Palm (Pineapple Palm) that the fronds look real nice and give it the pineapple look, but after about 4 or 5 years the lower ones rot away and you end up seeing the trunk of the tree. I was just wondering if this is the same kind of deal.

fronds look green still. normal for the old frond bases to split and fall off, leaving a bare trunk. I'm surprised yours lasted this long.
