I know a perfectly good mother who had her children taken and given to her mother-in-law because her mother-in-law hates her and works for the judge. The basis cited in law for the decision was "best interest of the children". Essentially the argument was that because at some time in the past they went without running water for a few weeks - she was unfit to be a mother (despite having a perfectly decent place to live now). This is criminalization of poverty - plain and simple.
Criminilization of gender?

How old is the child? What was the basis for the father's custody in the first place? Temporary pending a hearing? Or was the mother a bad mother?
