Pop worked at MSY back then. He wasn't on shift when it happened but went in later that day. Consensus in the shop was that the pilot was nuts to take off into that weather.
All systems on the ground back then were vacuum tube computers. After this, he and several co-workers developed an application to run on those old machines to predict crash site locations based on last known good flight data.
