Lee was by all accounts a first-rate and honorable man. Few people of any stripe dispute that. Lincoln, Stanton, Grant, Sherman...almost all admired him.
His citizenship was restored in the 1980s.

I did not know his citizenship was reinstated. Ironically, I just got back from a trip to Gettysburg. One of the things that stuck in my head is that Lee never regained his citizenship. Was told that on a tour.
I still say the Virginia flag would be most appropriate, because Lee was steadfastly loyal to that state.
