The only thing that may/may not weigh in is if you have family that you are very close to (relationship wise), especially aging parents, etc. It's not like you can hop in the car and drive over - and at the income level doesn't really give a whole lot for flying back and forth along with trying to live.

He is 24 though. He is at the age where he needs to be living for himself and not for his family.

You only get one life on this earth, you can't live it to please your family. Your 20s is the time to explore and find yourself before you settle down. Any decent parent will encourage their child to do what makes them happy and not be selfish and try to guilt their child in staying closer to them.

True, but there are also parents who don't "guilt" their children into such things.

Thanks to Uncle Sam, we have spent a lot of time away...and there is a lot that I have missed - like the death of two grandparents; nephews/nieces; and a lot of other things. Not that I am complaining, though, because so much good has also come out of it. It's just that there have been a lot of things missed that won't be repeated.

I am not saying that he should/shouldn't do anything. If those are important factors in his life, then it is something to think about.
