I figure quite a few posters on here are in or have experience working in the financial field. i'm currently trying to put together a resume and will begin the job search in a week or so and looking for any helpful advice or guidance.

I have a bachelors in poli sci (mistake I know ) from LSU with a minor in econ. Just got my masters in finance with a concentration in economics also from lsu. I don't really have much work experience and none in the field. my work history consists of a rice mill, electrical company and the army reserves (with a few tours in the middle east). because of the military I was unable to do any internships or the like because my summers were either taken by them or I was going to summer school to make up for missed time.

I have never put together a resume before. any tips on how to make this minimal experience attractive to a company? I have many people tell me that my military experience will make finding employment fairly easy. is this an accurate assessment or just smoke blown up my arse? what kind of jobs am I looking at being qualified for and what should I expect during the job search?

any advice any of you have would be greatly appreciated.

Try GE. They hire a bunch of military guys and value their leadership and their ability to deal with structure with GE is full of.

Don't sell yourself short. Your military experience will be attractive to employers and I wouldn't consider your experiene to be minimal. Don't be afraid to apply for jobs that you're underqualified for. Fill out an application and let the company decide for themselves if you are what they're looking for. Finance is a broad field, so it might be helpful for readers to know what you're realy interested in.

Did you go to class at LSU, or did you do some kind of online thing?

I would have thought LSU would have helped you in this process. Business schools generally have career development people that bring companies onto campus for networking and interviews, help you with job searches and resume writing, etc.

Have you looked into any of this stuff? For what you just paid LSU, you shouldn't be going into this cold.

Beyond that... you might have to leave Louisiana. This just isn't a good market for decent entry-level biz degree jobs. We just don't have the corporate base here - which not only elimiates big corps as employers - but also means we don't have the banks, analysts, etc. Small firms, by and large, don't like to train new people.

I know so many people in finance accounting, economics, even marketing, that had to leave the state for a few years to get experience. Then, when you have 5 years exp here, you can work anywhere you want in the state.

With your military background, I'd contact all of the military contractors (Northrup Grumman, etc) as well as the big aeorspace companies. But again, you are looking a corporate job... and that means out of state.

Good luck!
