One of the best books I ever read, period.

Me too. I could not believe when I read it that I had never heard the story before.

Did Angelina Jolie's movie get tax credits?

Everybody should read it.
He definitely had it shitty during the war (huge understatement)

This guy is just amazing in so many different ways, most especially his salvation and his forgiveness of his former captors/torturers.
Sucks that Watanabe (his worst torturer) was never punished for his actions and lived a long and apparently wealthy life.

It was absolutely powerful that he quit smoking and drinking cold turkey after attending that Bill Graham crusade. Alcoholic with the most powerful excuses to drink. What he endured no man walks away from unscathed. Then BAM--no more. Suddenly a man at peace. Forgave the Bird. Strong stuff there.
I don't believe I have ever read anybody's life story that was comparable to his. Poor juvenile delinquent ends up the Olympics, endured pure hell in the sea for 47 days, tortured for two years, comes home a hero--medal of honor, comes back to track--breaks ankle again, descends into alcoholism.
Read it. It is strong.

His accomplishments in track were extraordinary given his background. Survived an attack on his plane that killed everybody else but him and the pilot. Two weeks latter I believe he crash lands in the sea and spends I think 47 days in a raft only to rescued by Japs and held in deplorable conditions for 2 years I believe. Remarkable.

Letting go of resentments is spiritually powerful but I kinda wish he had been able to get just one good punch upside Mutsuhiro Watanabe's head before he died.
I'm thinking Watanabe "The Bird" died around '03.
Someone gave me Zamperini's book around the time it came out and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the kind of book where once you start reading, it's hard to put down.

How the hell does someone survive 47 days drifting on the high seas?

In a WWII era raft at that. It was incredible luck.
Laura Hillenbrand is my favorite author right now. She also wrote Seabiscuit. I read if after I read Unbroken. I was never interested in a horse story but it is a great read too. The degree of research she does to write her books is amazing.
She suffers from some Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and rarely leaves her house according to Wiki. I will read anything she publishes. I hope she writes more.

Well figuratively he did. He asked to meet him when he carried the torch at the Tokyo Olympics in 98. Bird refused. In front of the world that was paying attention Zamperini revealed the man as a man of no character.
